Let me tell you a story …

Just over a year ago, I was visiting Melbourne, seeking the best Japanese incense … the kind that takes hold of your senses and transports you to another place.
Unable to find any, I decided to bring it to Melbourne myself. I imagined a small shopfront on Greville Street, inspired by the simplicity of traditional Japanese design – a tranquil space where people could slow down, forget their hectic lives for a few moments, and be delighted – transported, even – by their sense of smell.
I took a trip to the heart of traditional Japan – Kyoto – to meet 12th generation incense makers … I visited magical Ubud, and met the wonderful people of Utama Spice, restoring the practice of traditional Balinese herbal wisdom … made contact with the German – Nepalese Buddhist cooperative, OneWorld, in the Land of the Medicine Buddha, Nepal … the wildcrafters of Juniper Ridge in the Pacific Northwest of North America … the divinely inspired Sage and Mage right here in Melbourne … Australian ceramic artists, Karen Ho, Mrs Peterson, Kanimbla Clay and Pattie Murray.
And so Metta Scents was created. We are at 111 Greville Street. Kim and son Dan, in a small shopfront, just as I imagined.
Everything at Metta Scents has a story. (Including our greeter greyhound, Horse, who is enjoying his second career much more than he did racing!)
Everything has been personally selected, ensuring that all products are 100% natural, sustainably and ethically created.
We sell the very best incense, essential oils, soy candles, soaps, Japanese paper, ceramics … gifts for the senses, hand made and whole hearted.
Smells detonate softly in our memory like poignant land mines … hit a tripwire of smell, and memories explode all at once. ~ Diane Ackerman
